Snow and ice warnings issued across the UK as 20cm of snow is expected in some regions.

UK Faces Severe Snowstorm: Met Office Issues Warnings for Snow and Ice Across the Country

As the UK braces for a harsh weather event, the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice, covering large swathes of the country.

The warnings, which came into effect Monday afternoon and evening, span across Northern Ireland, northern Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, and North Wales.

Snowfall is expected to cause disruption, with up to 20 cm of snow forecast to accumulate in some areas.

According to the latest Met Office radar map, snow is expected to begin falling in the Peak District at around 6 pm, before spreading across northern England throughout the night.

By 11 pm, a 150-mile band of snow will stretch from the northern Lake District to Leicestershire, affecting key cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, and Sheffield.

UKHSA advises people to stay safe and check on vulnerable neighbors during extreme cold weather.

The weather system, driven by cold Arctic air, will bring plunging temperatures in the coming days, and further snowfall is predicted later this week.

The heaviest snow is expected to settle on higher ground, particularly in northern Scotland, but areas with lower elevations may also see significant snowfall, with up to 10 cm expected in some regions.

The combination of rain, sleet, and snow will lead to hazardous driving conditions and disruptions to road and public transport.

Along with snow, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a health warning, urging people, especially the elderly, to stay safe and warm during the extreme cold.

The UKHSA recommends checking on vulnerable neighbors and relatives and advises people to prepare for power cuts and ice on untreated surfaces.

For those affected, the Met Office has provided tips for staying safe during the snowstorm, including allowing extra time for travel and being ready for potential power outages.

As this severe weather event continues into Tuesday morning, the UK faces significant challenges, with the possibility of widespread disruption to daily life.
