Storms Elin and Fergus bring heavy rain and strong winds across the UK.

UK Braces for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds from Storms Elin and Fergus

The UK faces continued heavy rain as storms Elin and Fergus converge, prompting four yellow weather warnings for Monday.

The Met Office anticipates substantial rainfall in northeast Scotland, including Aberdeen, southwest Scotland, most of northwest England, and West Yorkshire. The warnings are expected to extend into Wednesday, with persistent showers and strong coastal winds.

Storm Elin hit on Saturday, damaging the rail network and causing train cancellations. Motorists faced challenges, including a rescue operation for a woman and a dog trapped in a submerged car in Maesbury Marsh, Shropshire.

The following day, Storm Fergus arrived, named by the Irish meteorological service Met Éireann, bringing additional heavy rain and gusty winds, particularly affecting Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

Flood alerts are issued as storms cause travel disruptions and river overflow risks.

The Met Office predicts two rain bands across the UK, with intense rainfall on Sunday in Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

The deep low-pressure system moving towards the Republic of Ireland is expected to worsen conditions, causing travel disruptions across road, rail, air, and ferry services. Coastal areas will also face spray and large waves.

Storm Fergus is likely to bring further rain, with potential hail and thunder, and strong winds, particularly in southern Wales and the Bristol Channel.

Met Office chief meteorologist Andy Page warned that the weekend’s weather will be “wet and windy,” with potential disruptions.

Overnight on Saturday, a yellow rain warning was in effect for northern England before being replaced by four new warnings. The Environment Agency has issued 50 flood warnings and 246 flood alerts across England, while Wales has five alerts and Scotland has nine alerts and three warnings.

Flood duty manager Kate Marks advised caution around swollen rivers and warned that just 30cm of flowing water can move a car.
