Tropical Cyclone Lincoln brings torrential rain and severe weather to Northern Australia, causing flash floods.

Cyclone Lincoln Hits Northern Australia, Brings Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flooding

Over the weekend, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued severe warnings across Northern Australia due to Tropical Cyclone Lincoln.

Lincoln made landfall on Friday afternoon as a Category 1 cyclone, maintaining its intensity through the evening before being downgraded to a tropical low or ex-tropical cyclone (Ex-TC).

By Saturday morning, Centre Island, northeast of Borroloola where Lincoln made landfall, had received 202mm of rain in 24 hours.

The Ex-TC gradually moved westward across the Northern Territory, bringing heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts. The BOM issued flash flood warnings for northern districts, predicting rainfall totals of 60-100mm in six hours and 80-140mm over 24 hours.

Menorca braces for intense northerly winds and high waves as weather conditions worsen on Tuesday.

Tennant Creek in the Barkly district recorded 138.4mm of rain within 24 hours by Sunday morning.

Additional warnings were issued for intense rainfall and life-threatening flash floods, with up to 150mm possible in six hours near the cyclone’s center and up to 220mm in 24 hours.

Ex-TC Lincoln is expected to reach Western Australia by late Monday, passing through the Kimberley region before moving into the Indian Ocean mid-week, where it might regenerate into a tropical cyclone.

Lincoln was the third cyclone of the season, which runs from November to April, following Cyclone Kirrily earlier in the month and Cyclone Jasper in December. Some areas in the Northern Territory were still recovering from Kirrily’s flooding, especially in the Victoria River catchment.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued a coastal risk warning for Menorca on Tuesday. High pressure over the Spanish peninsula will lead to northerly winds affecting the island, with gusts potentially reaching 70km/h and waves up to 5 meters in height, particularly from midday to 10 pm.
