Central and northern NSW could see 100-150mm of rain this week.

NSW Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Over the Next 10 Days

The New South Wales coast is bracing for significant rainfall over the next 10 days, with the potential for flooding as a high-pressure system interacts with an inland low.

Forecasts predict 100-150mm of rain for the central and northern NSW coastline and 60-80mm for western NSW.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to start affecting north-west NSW and the central coastline on Tuesday afternoon, with persistent rain anticipated across the state. According to Weatherzone, this could continue for up to 10 days in some areas.

Flooding risk increases as heavy rain persists across eastern NSW this weekend.

Senior meteorologist Christie Johnson from the Bureau of Meteorology explained that a large high-pressure system from the south will move over Tasmania, Victoria, NSW, and Queensland this week, bringing showers to these southeastern states.

By Thursday, a low-pressure system is predicted to form and move across inland NSW, interacting with a surface trough. This will bring additional showers and possible thunderstorms.

The system will move towards the east coast on Friday, where it will likely combine with existing coastal showers, leading to the heaviest rainfall. Western and central NSW, along with southern Queensland, are also expected to experience rain for up to two days.

Johnson noted that the eastern part of NSW could see particularly heavy rainfall, especially over the weekend. Flooding is a potential risk, especially in areas with already saturated river catchments. The ongoing rain may continue into the middle of next week, creating a notably wet period.
