Heavy rain and strong winds have prompted a series of flood warnings across England and Wales, with 35 warnings currently in effect. As intense rainfall moved eastward across the UK on Saturday morning, England recorded 27 flood warnings while Wales had eight. Additionally, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued six flood alerts for Scotland.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain in Wales and southwest England, predicting that many areas could receive 20-30mm of rain over six to nine hours. Higher elevations might see even more substantial rainfall, ranging from 50-60mm.
This weather is part of a broader pattern of unsettled conditions expected throughout the weekend, which could shift from heavy rain and cloud cover to a mix of sunshine and showers.
In Cornwall and Devon, heavy rain and strong winds have disrupted local roads. Police in Callington have warned drivers to exercise caution due to significant standing water on main routes, advising adjustments to driving in line with the conditions to ensure safety.
The Met Office has also forecasted that some showers may be heavy and could include hail and thunderstorms, with wind conditions likely to intensify.
By Saturday night, while showers may persist and become heavy at times, clearer skies are expected in eastern regions. Additionally, severe gales are anticipated to develop in northwest Scotland, contributing to a notably windy and colder end to the weekend.
As the weather continues to fluctuate, residents are advised to stay informed through local updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe amid the ongoing adverse conditions.
