Heavy rains are expected to affect various parts of India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for several regions. A yellow alert has been issued for districts in West Bengal, Odisha, and Kerala, while an orange alert has been declared for parts of the western coast of India.
In West Bengal and Odisha, a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is set to bring significant rainfall this weekend.
This system, likely to strengthen into a well-defined low-pressure area, will move northwest towards northern Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, leading to heavy rains on September 29 and 30.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has warned of rainfall between 7 to 11 cm in districts such as Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected in several areas including Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur.
Kerala is experiencing waterlogging and traffic disruptions due to continuous rains since the night of September 28.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for 10 districts: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Heavy rains, ranging from 6 to 11 cm, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds, are forecasted. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority advises residents, especially in highland and coastal areas, to stay alert due to ongoing flooding and traffic issues.
On the western coast, an orange alert covers parts of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka, including Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, North Goa, South Goa, Uttar Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshin Kannada. This alert indicates heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Similar conditions are also expected for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
