Gold Coast sees severe flooding with 389mm of rain recorded in 24 hours.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Batter South-East Queensland Amid New Year Storms

South-east Queensland is experiencing heavy rainfall, marking a soggy start to the year, with dangerous flooding expected. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning on Monday afternoon, indicating that intense rainfall could lead to life-threatening flash floods.

In the 24 hours leading up to 9 am on Monday, Upper Springbrook on the Gold Coast received 389mm of rain, Little Nerang Dam 276mm, and Hotham Creek near Pimpama 264mm.

Flood warnings have been issued for the Nerang, Pimpama, and Coomera Rivers due to rising water levels exacerbated by intense rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts severe weather through Tuesday, including heavy rain that may cause dangerous flash flooding and landslips, especially in steep areas.

Northern NSW also faces flash floods as persistent heavy rain continues through Tuesday.

The heaviest rainfall is expected with showers and thunderstorms, though their timing and movement remain uncertain.

On Monday morning, 18 roads on the Gold Coast were closed due to flooding. Queensland police have advised against travel as hazardous conditions persist. Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream reported issues with drivers not adjusting to the conditions.

Severe weather has plagued Queensland’s south-east since Christmas Day, leaving over 100,000 residents without power.

Acting Environment Minister Grace Grace stated that while 80% to 90% of those affected have had power restored, some areas, including Jimboomba and Mount Tamborine, may experience delays until January 5 due to ongoing network repairs.

Flash floods are also a concern in northern NSW, with residents in Lismore, Tweed Heads, and other areas advised to stay updated on conditions. Persistent showers are expected, with potential rainfall totals reaching 250mm.

In contrast, northern Australia is facing a heatwave, with temperatures soaring into the 40s. Marble Bar in WA is forecasted to hit 45°C on Tuesday, with temperatures in the town’s local RSL thermometer exceeding 51°C.

The heatwave conditions are expected to ease slightly throughout the week in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.
