Gusty winds are fueling a rapidly growing wildfire in central Oregon, part of a series of blazes erupting across the US west as the region swelters under scorching temperatures. The fire, which broke out just outside the community of La Pine, has already consumed 2,415 acres and threatens nearby homes and businesses. While fire crews have managed to contain 30% of the blaze, strong winds continue to hinder progress.
Residents of La Pine, a popular destination known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, were forced to evacuate as a towering plume of smoke billowed over the area. Jodi Kerr, owner of a local home decor and gift store, packed up her inventory in preparation for the evacuation, acknowledging the risks that come with living in a fire-prone region. “It’s part of the risk of living in an area like this. It’s beautiful, but it’s wild,” she said.
As the fire rages on, authorities are still investigating its cause. Meanwhile, other parts of the country are also experiencing an uptick in wildfires. In southern California, over 2,500 residents were ordered to evacuate as a blaze spread through dry brush near Torrey Pines state beach. In northern California, a fire in Palermo, Butte county, has grown to 25% contained, while in central California, a lightning-sparked fire has covered nearly 11 square miles in eastern Fresno county.
The situation is equally dire in New Mexico, where residents are still reeling from a recent string of fires and floods. The state has seen over 100 new fires in the last week, with many more expected to erupt as the climate crisis drives extreme weather patterns. Meanwhile, Alaska is also experiencing a surge in wildfires, with over 100 blazes burning through remote terrains.
As the fire season gets underway, firefighters are bracing for more intense and frequent blazes. With hotter temperatures and lightning predicted for the region, the danger is only expected to escalate. As one official noted, “Lightning continues to be the harbinger of wildfires in Alaska with almost all of the recent starts attributed to this natural phenomenon.” With critical fire conditions lingering in the forecast, the challenges ahead will be daunting.
