Unusual weather patterns led to over 150mm of rain in eastern Spain this week.

Spain Faces Severe Rainfall from Gota Fría as Eastern Regions Brace for Impact

Spain is bracing for a significant weather event this week as severe rainfall is predicted, particularly along the eastern coastline.

Regions including Valencia, Catalonia, Murcia, and eastern Andalucía may receive more than 150mm of rain within just 24 hours on Tuesday.

This amount is over seven times the typical monthly average for November. Gibraltar is also expected to see substantial rainfall, with totals likely to exceed 40mm.

The anticipated downpour is attributed to a weather phenomenon known as a *gota fría*, or “cold drop,” which occurs when cold air interacts with the warmer waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

This seasonal occurrence creates instability in the atmosphere, causing warm, saturated air to rise rapidly.

Within hours, towering cumulonimbus clouds form, leading to heavy rainfall across the eastern parts of Spain.

Tropical Storm Kong-rey threatens Taiwan with heavy rains and wind gusts exceeding 100mph.

Known officially as “depresión aislada en niveles altos” (Dana), the *gota fría* can bring torrential rain, hail, thunderstorms, and severe flooding.

However, the localized nature of this weather pattern makes it challenging to predict exactly where the heaviest rainfall will occur.

Meanwhile, the United States is experiencing unusually high nighttime temperatures this week, with lows expected to surpass 20°C in cities such as Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Fort Worth—over 9°C above seasonal averages.

This warmth is linked to a southerly airflow drawing heat from the Gulf of Mexico.

In the north Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Kong-rey is tracking northwest and is projected to approach Taiwan by early this week, with potential landfall expected on Thursday morning.

Strengthening rapidly, Kong-rey may develop into a typhoon, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, with totals exceeding 300mm in northern Taiwan.

The storm poses a significant risk of severe flooding and disruption, with wind gusts predicted to exceed 100mph. However, the exact track remains uncertain and may shift in the coming days.
