CLEVELAND — As Cleveland marks one year since the tragic shooting following the 2023 Christmas tree lighting at Public Square, safety improvements have been put in place for this year’s WinterLand event.
Visitors can expect enhanced security measures aimed at ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Last year, two teens were wounded in a double shooting after a fight broke out near the event.
Cleveland police responded quickly to the scene, with surveillance footage capturing the chaos.
The incident raised safety concerns, prompting the city’s leadership to take action ahead of this year’s festivities.
In preparation for the Winterland event on Saturday, there are visible and invisible security upgrades in place.
One major improvement is the installation of a high-tech camera that feeds directly into the city’s Real Time Crime Center.
The camera will provide live monitoring, helping officers respond swiftly to any potential issues.
Additionally, social media is being monitored to prevent street takeovers or other disruptions that could impact the event.
Ed Eckart, Senior VP of Operations for Downtown Cleveland, acknowledged the impact of last year’s incident, expressing his sadness over the event.
However, he reassured the public that safety is a top priority. “Downtown is safe,” he said, emphasizing the balance between maintaining security and preserving the welcoming atmosphere of Public Square.
Fahrenheit Owner and Chef Rocco Whalen also voiced his confidence in the city’s commitment to safety.
Whalen, a downtown business owner, highlighted the increased police presence and encouraged Clevelanders to enjoy the Winterland festivities with excitement.
The event, which includes a tree lighting ceremony, skating, and fireworks, is expected to be a staple of holiday celebrations in downtown Cleveland.
With these enhancements, residents and visitors alike can look forward to a festive and secure WinterLand celebration in Cleveland’s Public Square.
