Severe weather conditions are sweeping across various parts of the globe, significantly impacting North America and South Asia.
An area of low pressure moving along the US-Canada border has brought heavy snowfall to parts of western Canada over the weekend.
Provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan are under weather warnings, with up to 250mm (10in) of snow expected.
The weather system is predicted to continue bringing snow to eastern Canada early this week, with temperatures dropping drastically.
In Saskatoon, temperatures are expected to plummet to -20°C, well below the seasonal average of +15°C, while cold air from the north will push southwards into the US towards the weekend.
Winter Storm Brings Snow to Western Canada
In Sri Lanka, an area of low pressure developed off the Philippines’ coast is moving towards the country.
Although not expected to develop into a tropical storm, the system is expected to cause heavy rain, with up to 150mm expected in just 24 hours.
Sri Lanka has issued a red weather warning for thunderstorms, and disruption is expected as the low-pressure system moves northwards towards the east coast of India, potentially causing further adverse weather.
Meanwhile, Europe is experiencing dramatic temperature swings. After a spell of wintry conditions, temperatures across north-western Europe have surged, with places like Paris experiencing temperatures in the mid-teens, far above the November average.
In Santon Downham, England, temperatures soared from 2.7°C to 18.7°C in just three days, marking a significant shift.
Storm Bert, which ended the cold snap, led to sharp increases in temperatures across the region, with many weather stations reporting a quick rise from freezing to well above normal levels.
Sudden Temperature Rise in Paris Following Storm Bert
In South Africa, the weather is also expected to fluctuate significantly. Eastern parts of the country will see temperatures soaring to 36-39°C on Monday, well above the seasonal average.
However, by Wednesday, a heavy rain system will bring temperatures back down to 15-20°C, causing a sudden drop of 5-7°C below normal for some regions.
