The UK is set to experience a sharp drop in temperatures on Monday following a mild weekend, according to the Met Office.
On Sunday, the country will enjoy highs of around 15-16C, but this warm weather will quickly give way to colder conditions, especially by Monday night.
Becky Mitchell, a spokeswoman for the Met Office, explained that Sunday would remain mild, but with wet and windy weather conditions in some regions, particularly in Wales and north-west England.
“We have got highs of 15 or 16C on Sunday,” said Mitchell. “It will be quite wet and windy, with various bands of rain coming in from the west, some of which could be heavy at times.”
Despite the rain, there will be some dry spells throughout the day, and the highest temperatures will be seen in the southwest of England, where the mercury may reach 16C.
In the south-east, a mix of showers and brighter spells will make for an unpredictable day, while Wales and north-west England could experience heavier rainfall.
However, the warmer weather will not last long. Starting Monday, temperatures are expected to fall significantly, with highs dipping into the mid-single figures.
Monday night could see temperatures drop to as low as minus 7C in parts of rural Scotland, making it the coldest night of the week. “We will probably see the highest temperature in the south-west of England, which could be 16C,” Mitchell added.
The drop in temperatures will be accompanied by some showery outbreaks of rain, along with a northerly wind. Tuesday will bring further rain, particularly moving in from the west, and overnight frost is expected, especially on Monday night.
As the week progresses, the weather will become more typical for December, with temperatures returning to average by midweek, although rain and some dry spells will continue throughout.
