The weather is set to take a dramatic turn this Monday night, with temperatures dropping below freezing in some areas.
The Met Office has warned that the coldest night of the week will likely be Monday, as temperatures could plummet to as low as minus 8°C in certain parts of Scotland, particularly in highland regions with a snow line.
Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna explained that the brief cold spell will give way to more typical temperatures by Tuesday.
“On Monday night, it’s likely to be the coldest, with temperatures dropping to minus 8°C in one or two spots in Scotland. On Tuesday night, Scotland could experience minus 3°C,” he said.
“Further south, parts of England may see temperatures as low as minus 2°C or minus 3°C.”
This weekend, much milder weather prevailed, with temperatures reaching 16.4°C in Cardiff due to winds bringing in warmer air from the south and southwest.
Milder air from the Atlantic is set to bring above-average temperatures by Tuesday, following a short-lived cold snap over the weekend.Petagna noted that these temperatures were about five degrees above the seasonal average of 10-12°C for this time of year.
However, by Monday, a shift in winds to a colder northerly direction will cause temperatures to drop.
Despite the cold snap, the chilly conditions are expected to be short-lived.
Petagna assured that by Tuesday, milder air from the Atlantic will push in, bringing above-average temperatures once again.
“Later on Tuesday, winds will shift back from the Atlantic, and temperatures will start to rise,” he added.
There is, however, a chance of another dip in temperatures next weekend, as northerly winds could return, bringing another brief cold spell.
For now, though, the colder conditions will be short-lived, and temperatures will return to more typical levels by mid-week.
