Australia's long weekend brings sunshine to many capitals, but rain returns on Tuesday morning.

Long Weekend Brings Sunshine to Capitals, But Rain Expected for Return to Work

The long weekend has offered pleasant weather across Australia’s major cities, but residents should prepare for a soggy return to work on Tuesday.

While Melbourne and Hobart experienced a foggy start on Saturday, and rain fell in Brisbane and Darwin, Sydney, Canberra, and Adelaide enjoyed sunny skies that are expected to continue through the weekend.

Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth will see maximum temperatures ranging from 27°C to 30°C until Tuesday.

Melbourne and Hobart will have cooler conditions, with Melbourne reaching around 24°C and Hobart about 21°C. Adelaide will experience a high of 31°C on Saturday, but temperatures will drop to 22°C by Tuesday.

As the weather system approaches, southern Australia prepares for a damp end to the weekend.

According to Angus Hines, a senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, a weather system moving in from the southwest will bring rain to southern Australia starting Monday.

Hines noted that while the system was still off the southern coast on Saturday, it is expected to bring wet weather to most capitals as it progresses east. “It’s a little bit of a damp finish to the long weekend,” Hines said.

Despite the rainy outlook, Perth will continue to enjoy dry conditions. The forecast for the latter half of the week remains uncertain, with details about Friday still emerging.

On Tuesday, Melbourne is likely to experience rain, and Hobart should see showers as the weather system moves through the south-east.

By Wednesday, Sydney and Canberra will also face potential showers, with northern regions like far north Queensland and Darwin continuing to experience their wet season, including thunderstorms and rain.
