Vermont has set the fastest timeline in the U.S. to achieve 100% renewable electricity.
Under a new law, Green Mountain Power, the state’s largest utility, is mandated to meet the goal by 2030. Smaller municipal utilities are given a slightly extended deadline of 2035.
“This law positions Vermont as a leader in clean energy, harnessing the power of the sun, wind, and earth,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America.
“By codifying this goal, the state is accelerating its transition to clean energy and setting a powerful example for the nation.”
Previously, Vermont utilities were required to source 75% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2032.
This new commitment places Vermont among 13 states nationwide that have enacted laws aiming for 100% clean or renewable electricity.
This move aligns with growing trends across the country toward sustainability and climate action. For more details on Vermont’s renewable energy progress, visit the Renewables on the Rise dashboard.
