Residents of Carrier Mills, Illinois, reported multiple sightings of a bear, with at least one person capturing it on camera. James Arnold described his unexpected encounter while relaxing in his yard. Initially mistaking the bear for a large dog, Arnold and his wife quickly realized it was indeed a bear, a rare sight in their area.
Arnold’s daughter, Alex Hull, found the encounter intriguing but was primarily concerned about safety, particularly for her children and livestock. Hull emphasized the importance of caution given her father’s mobility issues and the potential threat to other animals. The presence of a bear was unprecedented for them, although they have encountered other wildlife like armadillos and mountain lions.
The bear was last seen crossing a cornfield and a highway, appearing nervous around people. Arnold’s wife managed to take photos of the bear from a distance, despite Arnold’s reservations about getting too close. Saline County officials advised the public to avoid approaching the bear, emphasizing safety.
Sheriff Whipper Johnson consulted with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), who recommended letting the bear move on naturally. Johnson explained that the bear was likely passing through in search of other black bears and typically avoids human contact. The bear’s journey probably started in Kentucky, with potential destinations including Wisconsin or Missouri.
In the meantime, locals are advised to remain vigilant and contact IDNR or law enforcement if they feel threatened. Arnold and others in the area may have additional opportunities to spot the bear as it continues its journey, but safety remains the priority.
