How Did America Get Its Name?

It is beneficial to reflect on the early travelers when we are stuck at home and yearn to leave.

We call these people "explorers" because they went out to find new places when no one knew anything about life outside of their country or even their city.

But, as every American child learns, Christopher Columbus was the first person to find the continent. This happened in 1492.

So why isn’t the country named Columba

?

Amerigo Vespucci is supposedly the person after whom America gets its name.

Vespucci was the first person to say that the continent Columbus found was not the same as the one he had been looking for.

Later, the German cartografer Martin Waldseemuller became the first to give this continent the name America, which is a latitudinized version of America.

In a document signed by Vespucci in the year 1503, called Mundus Novus, meaning New World,
