Residents in Australia’s eastern states are advised to brace for severe storms over the Christmas weekend. Thunderstorms are forecast to impact a wide area, including New South Wales, south-east Queensland, and parts of Victoria, from Christmas Eve through Boxing Day.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns of potential flash flooding with rainfall amounts reaching up to 100mm. Senior meteorologist Angus Hines highlighted that while thunderstorms are typical in December, the upcoming ones are expected to be particularly intense.
He noted that the weather could rapidly shift from clear and warm to severe thunderstorms, bringing risks of damaging winds, heavy rain, and hail.
NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz urged residents to prepare their homes and avoid unnecessary risks.
With anticipated rainfall between 50mm and 100mm, there are concerns about flash flooding and storm damage. The SES is monitoring the situation closely and is ready to deploy resources if necessary.
On Saturday, the Bureau issued a severe thunderstorm warning for NSW, covering heavy rain, large hail, and damaging winds.
This warning spans from the northeastern border with Queensland to the southwestern corner of the state. Updates on the situation can be followed through the Bureau of Meteorology’s updates.
Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are all expected to experience showers and possible thunderstorms on Christmas Day.
Melbourne might see up to 30mm of rain with temperatures around 23°C, while Brisbane could receive 20mm of rain with a high of 33°C. Sydney is forecast to get 7mm of rain and reach 28°C. Canberra may also face storms with up to 25mm of rain and temperatures up to 23°C.
Meanwhile, a heatwave warning is in effect for parts of Western Australia, with temperatures in the mid-to-low 40s forecast for the Kimberley, Pilbara, and surrounding areas.
Perth will experience temperatures of 36°C on Christmas Eve and 33°C on Christmas Day, while Hobart and Adelaide will have cooler weather at around 21°C, with a chance of showers. Darwin is expected to enjoy a sunny Christmas with a high of 34°C.
