Jatin Singh, Founder and CEO of Skymetweather.com, anticipates a positive monsoon season in India for 2024. Skymet, a top weather forecasting agency, predicts a normal monsoon, with minimal impact from El Nino.
El Nino, known for warming ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific, can disrupt global weather and typically weakens monsoons in India. This reduction in rainfall can harm agriculture by depriving crops of necessary water.
“There is a better chance of a normal, above normal, or excess monsoon than a below-normal one. The likelihood of drought or below-normal rainfall is very low,” Singh commented.
He emphasized the current favorable indicators for the upcoming monsoon season. “The Pacific is transitioning from El Nino to neutral conditions, and potentially towards La Nina. Additionally, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is positive and supportive,” Singh explained.
This transition is expected to result in a normal monsoon season, offering relief to those reliant on the rains for agriculture and water resources.
Singh also highlighted Skymet’s forecasting methodology, which blends long-range and short-range predictions using advanced computing and statistical analysis, refined over years of experience. He acknowledged previous challenges in predicting month-to-month monsoon variations but expressed confidence in this year’s forecast.
Skymet is set to release a more detailed analysis in mid-April. For now, the preliminary forecast offers encouraging news, particularly for agriculture, which depends heavily on consistent monsoon patterns.
