Cyclone Megan’s gale-force winds and heavy rain disrupt northern Australia, causing severe flooding.

Severe Weather Events Impacting Global Regions: Cyclone in Australia, Cold Snap in Finland, and Heatwave in South Sudan

A cyclone warning affects northern Australia, impacting coastal communities from Groote Eylandt to the Northern Territory/Queensland border.

Tropical Cyclone Megan, which formed in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Saturday, has been classified as a category 3 cyclone by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

Megan is expected to make landfall on Monday but has already caused gale-force winds and heavy rainfall, including over 400mm of rain on Groote Eylandt in just 24 hours.

There is a possibility that Megan could escalate to a category 4 storm before landfall, with wind gusts potentially reaching 125km/h.

Finland faces a cold snap with heavy snow and temperatures dropping well below average.

This is the fifth named cyclone of the season in Australian waters, which is below the average of about 10 cyclones for this time of year.

In Finland, March started relatively mild but took a colder turn over the weekend. A snowstorm has deposited 10-15cm of snow and brought freezing temperatures to parts of the country.

The cold snap is expected to persist, with minimum temperatures dropping as low as -16°C in Tampere, about 10°C below the seasonal average. Temperatures are anticipated to return to near or above average by the end of the week.

South Sudan is responding to an extreme heatwave by closing all schools indefinitely starting Monday. The heatwave is expected to last at least two more weeks, with temperatures ranging from 41-45°C and potentially reaching up to 50°C in the hottest areas.

Overnight temperatures will remain high, around 27-28°C, with the capital, Juba, experiencing daily highs of 40-42°C throughout the week.
