The Met Office has issued thunderstorm warnings for Saturday afternoon and evening across England and Wales. A yellow weather warning is in effect from 1 pm to 8 pm, covering much of Wales and southwest England.
The warning indicates the potential for sudden flooding and slow-moving heavy showers, which may disrupt transport and roads.
The Met Office cautioned that “spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.” There is a possibility that some communities could become temporarily isolated due to flooded roads.
The Met Office also warned of possible delays and cancellations to train and bus services where flooding or lightning strikes occur. Additionally, there is a risk of rapid flooding in some homes and businesses, leading to potential building damage.
Rainfall could reach up to 30mm within a few hours, though showers and thunderstorms are expected to ease by Saturday evening.
Residents in areas likely to be impacted are advised to check if their property is at risk of flooding and to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit.
Other recommendations include charging mobile devices, parking cars outside flood zones, storing valuables in elevated locations, and turning off water and gas supplies.
The Met Office further advised securing loose items like bins and garden furniture and preparing for power outages by having torches and candles ready.
They also emphasized the danger of driving, walking, or swimming through floodwaters, urging people to avoid it and call 999 if trapped in fast-flowing or deep water.
