New York has become the first state to leverage rebates from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to help residents lower their energy costs and reduce environmental impact.
Announced on Thursday, the state is expanding its EmPower+ program, offering eligible New Yorkers up to $14,000 in savings for energy-saving upgrades.
The program includes free home energy assessments, electrical upgrades, insulation installation, and the installation of electric heat pumps and water heaters.
Priority is given to households earning below 80% of the area’s median income, ensuring that energy-saving opportunities are accessible to lower-income residents.
This initiative comes as part of a broader push to promote clean energy and fight climate change.
“It’s exciting to see New York lead the way in implementing IRA-funded rebates,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy.
“This is a win-win for both homeowners and the environment. With tax credits and rebates, there’s never been a better time for New Yorkers to reduce energy waste and lower their bills.”
The expansion marks a significant step forward in making energy-efficient upgrades more affordable and sustainable, advancing New York’s clean energy goals and reducing pollution statewide.
