The August bank holiday weekend commenced with challenging weather conditions across the UK, featuring heavy rainfall and cooler-than-average temperatures.
Central and southern regions experienced significant downpours, with forecasts predicting up to 70mm of rain. A yellow weather warning has been issued for much of the south-east, remaining in effect until Saturday lunchtime.
According to the Met Office, further blustery showers are expected on Saturday night, particularly impacting northern and western areas. London will see temperatures around 15°C, while Manchester will experience slightly cooler conditions at 14°C.
As we move into Sunday, the weather is anticipated to improve, though showers are likely to persist in eastern regions, northern England, and southern Scotland. While winds will increase and remain gusty across the UK, they will not be as severe as those experienced on Friday morning with the onset of Storm Lilian.
Dan Holley, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, highlighted that beyond Saturday, southern and eastern regions should experience drier conditions for the rest of the long weekend.
Temperatures are expected to rise slightly by Monday but will remain cooler compared to usual norms. In contrast, north-western areas, including Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland, north-west England, and North Wales, may encounter persistent clouds, occasional rain, and brisk winds.
The yellow rain warning coincides with what is anticipated to be one of the busiest August bank holidays on record. The RAC estimates approximately 19.2 million leisure trips by car over the weekend, marking the highest volume since data collection began in 2015.
Travel disruptions have been reported, including blocked rail lines between Beverley and Scarborough and a landslip affecting the Honiton to Axminster route. Additionally, adverse weather led to delays at the Manx Grand Prix and the abandonment of a Vitality County Championship cricket match.
Looking ahead to Monday, the weather is expected to improve significantly, with more sunshine and calmer winds, offering a pleasant end to the long weekend.
