This weekend, parts of south-west England are set to experience potentially severe weather conditions. The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Sunday, covering the period from 4 am to 9 pm.
This alert signals a heightened risk of thunderstorms and heavy rain, which could lead to localized flooding and significant disruptions.
Meteorologists have highlighted the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms causing flooding in certain areas. There is a risk of quick and severe flooding, which could affect homes and businesses, potentially resulting in damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.
The adverse weather conditions may also lead to difficult driving situations, road closures, and disruptions to train and bus services.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop across southern England, the Midlands, northern England, and eastern Wales on Sunday.
While some showers and isolated thunderstorms may start to form on Saturday night, the more intense and organized weather will likely build throughout Sunday. The storms will move northwards through the afternoon and early evening.
The Met Office notes that while many areas might avoid the worst of the weather, those affected could see between 30-40mm of rain in less than an hour, with localized spots potentially receiving over 75mm. Frequent lightning strikes and hail are also anticipated, particularly in southern and central England.
In contrast to last year’s September heatwave, which saw temperatures soar above 30°C for seven consecutive days, this summer has been cooler than usual with slightly below-average sunshine. Rainfall has been variable across regions but generally average.
Stay informed and prepared for changing conditions throughout the weekend.
