Hurricane Kirk is making its way toward Europe. After reaching category 4 status in the mid-Atlantic with wind speeds of 145 mph at its peak, Kirk is now losing strength as it moves into cooler waters.
It is expected to downgrade to a category 1 hurricane by Monday. Over the next few days, Kirk will transition into an extratropical storm and is likely to reach Europe’s shores by Tuesday or Wednesday.
While its exact path remains uncertain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and northern Germany are expected to face strong winds and heavy rain.
The southern UK could also see heavy rain if Kirk shifts slightly further north.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Leslie continues to develop in the mid-Atlantic. It was upgraded to a category 1 hurricane on Saturday, with sustained winds reaching 90 mph by Sunday evening.
However, Leslie is predicted to weaken and become a tropical storm by Tuesday, posing no threat to land.
In the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storm Milton has been upgraded and is forecasted to intensify into a major hurricane as it heads towards Florida.
The storm could bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous storm surges along Florida’s west coast. This comes just a week after the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
Shifting to South America, a severe drought continues to affect Brazil after months of below-normal rainfall. Wildfires recently ravaged parts of the country, and water levels in the Amazon River are dropping rapidly.
The Port of Manus, located on the Negro River, has seen water levels plunge to a 120-year low at just 12.66 meters, compared to an average of 21 meters. Levels are expected to keep falling in the coming weeks.
