Heavy rain warnings were issued across Wales and England, with potential flooding and travel disruptions ahead.

Heavy Rain and Flood Warnings Across Wales and West England

The Met Office has issued extended warnings for heavy rain affecting parts of south-west England, the north and east Midlands, north-west England, and Wales, set to remain in effect until 9 PM Wednesday.

Areas could experience significant rainfall, with estimates of 50 to 80mm within just six hours.

Additionally, a new yellow warning will be in place from midday Wednesday until midnight, covering north-east and north-west England, as well as Yorkshire and Humber.

Many regions can expect around 20mm of rain, while some localized spots may receive between 50 to 80mm, with the potential for isolated thunderstorms.

According to forecasters, despite the heavy rain mild temperatures are expected, with highs reaching 20°C to 21°C in the south, approximately 5°C above the seasonal average.

Most areas will see temperatures between 13°C and 18°C.

Mild temperatures accompany heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms possible in northern and central regions.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst cautioned on Wednesday morning about potential travel disruptions and flooding due to the heavy rain.

“Outbreaks of rain have been moving north overnight,” he noted.

“The rain covers extensive areas, including Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and western England. In periods without rain, expect cloudy, misty, and murky conditions.”

Dewhurst added that while rain will continue in the affected regions, the east and south-east of England will likely remain drier. The rain should taper off in the south-west overnight, becoming more localized in parts of Scotland and north-east England by morning.

Looking ahead, Thursday promises a brighter day for most, with rain clearing quickly from Scotland and north-east England. Temperatures are projected between 16°C and 19°C.

By Friday, a divide will develop, with western regions experiencing cloud and rain, while central and eastern areas enjoy dry, sunny spells and temperatures ranging from 13°C to 16°C.

This latest warning follows recent heavy rainfall that has caused widespread flooding across the UK, marking September and early October as particularly wet months, with some regions experiencing record rainfall after a dry summer.
