The Met Office has updated its weather forecast for Monday afternoon, maintaining Amber and Yellow weather warnings due to ongoing severe conditions.
Since Sunday evening, southern regions have experienced intense rainfall, resulting in significant disruptions. Reports indicate widespread flooding, submerged vehicles, and closures of both roads and schools.
Public transportation services have also been affected. A selection of video footage from affected areas is available for viewing.
In Dunstable, local firefighters have shared footage of vehicles submerged on Luton Road. Emergency services have responded to eleven incidents, with additional support from neighboring stations. These emergencies are primarily attributed to the heavy rain and resultant flooding.
Education facilities have been impacted, with Harlington Upper and Harlington Lower Schools, as well as Cockernhoe Primary School, closed. Schools in Banbury are also shuttered, and multiple roads remain closed across the country.
The Met Office has warned that the region may experience up to a month’s worth of rainfall within the next 24 hours.
In their afternoon update, meteorologist Alex Deakin highlighted that heavy rain and showers will persist across central and southwestern areas throughout the day. The risk of thunderstorms could exacerbate existing flooding issues.
A “swirl of cloud” currently affecting the UK suggests a continued threat of severe weather.
Rainfall could range from 18mm to 100mm in various locations, with thunderstorms potentially affecting parts of Yorkshire. Residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for further developments.
